What I loved most about this experience was the ease of presenting the e-ticket, and of course seeing the inside of the monastery, it is truly beautiful. The bad thing, the waiting time to enter, today I had a long line at 11 am and I was able to enter until 12:50 pm.

Had a wonderful visit to the monestry. Avoided the early queues by going mid afternoon and enjoyed the beautiful cloisters without too many others spoiling the views!! Only dispappointment was to find the Church closed due to renovation work, so check before visiting.

Queue went down very quickly so not waiting for long to get in. Stunning building. The architecture was so beautiful and detailed. Very calm and cool inside the cloisters as well. Plenty opportunity and space to take pictures. Certainly worth a visit. Also went to the church next door. Also beautiful.

Beautiful and inspirational! Purchase your tickets online and the early time slot is the best. We arrived 20min prior to the 9:30 first showing and we were in the Monestary by 9:40. I did notice that the line got considerably longer and longer throughout the day. Definitely recommend visiting!

The monastery is magnificent. The interior is truly splendid, and the facade is also very impressive. The church is quite pretty. The visit is quick. But it's very crowded. Estimated waiting time was 2 hours. But fortunately, families with strollers get priority access without having to queue! Thank you for this.

It's a magnificent (if somewhat empty) space that transports us to another era. The church was being renovated, so there's nothing to see.

The monastery was great but the organisation wasn't amazing. Lining up for the cloisters then the church wasn't ideal. Only one person letting people through one at a time meant the line was long and in full sun on a hot day. Having session times might work better. Also a few of the rooms on the audio guide weren't accessible. The audio guide was quite good though.

Enjoyed the design and stonework of the monastery but found the tour was really just seeing the Cloister from each level with a minimal number of rooms open to view and understand the use of the Monastery. The Chapel also unfortunately had restoration scaffolding up at the altar and blocked most of that end of it. These thing plus the long lines lessened the experience.

You wait a long time in line, even if you have bought your tickets a long time ago and supposedly and you already have the tickets there is an entrance without a line... in short a disaster, the place is wonderful but you spend at least 45-50min waiting in the sun.

The admission without waiting time was good and the tour guide's explanations were interesting and entertaining. On the other hand, the explanations were too detailed and took far too long at around 90 minutes. Especially in view of the fact that only the cloister and the refectory were to be visited in the monastery, which could also be seen in a quick 15-minute tour. The visit to the monastery was followed by queuing in front of the church for around 30 minutes. When booking the tour, the queue in front of the church was not mentioned. All in all, the tour lasted more than 140 minutes without giving us a chance to sit down, which can be very tiring for people over 65.

The tour guide added a lot of information that was personal. Also he argued with the staff, he was taking too long at locations and tours were passing us. So much personal information it was hard to determine what was actually the information for the tour. He is studying to be a tour guide. He should stick to the tour information.

Everything on time, good guide. It took a while but everything was fine. MY DISCOMFORT IS THAT I WAS SOLD A TICKET WITH THE ENTRANCE TO THE BELEN TOWER AND IT WAS CLOSED FOR RENOVATION AND THAT HONESTLY I SEE IT AS A LIE TO WHAT WAS OFFERED AND HIGHER PRICE.

Reminder email send less than 24. hours so unable to cancel. was trying to change tour and was able to reach company providing tour but they couldn't do anything. Headput has NO whatsapp number so had to pay to contact them. tried 3 times- hung up on. when I finally reached them they said had no record of me trying to call. also your chat function that says speak with expert is a complete lie. It's a bot that kept telling me over and over again to start over. didn't understand what I needed . The representative I spoke to last night said they had no record of me using chat function even though I had repeatedly tried it during the day into evening when I finally reached a representative. She was fairly rude and said all she could offer was 25% of what I paid. I got back $25 but probably spent $10 in phone calls . 25% is just awful. I wasn't asking to be credited to my original payment. Just asking for credit to use on another tour. That's pretty standard unless you are greedy which apparently you are. I will probably not use you ever again and will definitely write a negative review on TripAdvisor

I didn't like the experience, the guide didn't have a professional attitude. He started by telling the group that they could go and have a look around the neighborhood. Then he told us about himself and his family, the political situation in Portugal, racism, and asked our opinion of the colonies. All this without hardly a word about the Jerónimos monastery! Beside us, the other guides introduced visitors to the site and gave explanations. Then we entered the site. Once again, we didn't get a general introduction to the site or its history. In short, we left the tour and followed other guides who knew how to structure their visit and share their knowledge. This tour was the worst I've ever been on (and extremely expensive for what we got).

Beautiful and inspirational! Purchase your tickets online and the early time slot is the best. We arrived 20min prior to the 9:30 first showing and we were in the Monestary by 9:40. I did notice that the line got considerably longer and longer throughout the day. Definitely recommend visiting!

Although the queue at the entrance was very long, the entry times were not long. Jeronimus Monastery is a tourist attraction not to be missed.

The monastery is magnificent. The interior is truly splendid, and the facade is also very impressive. The church is quite pretty. The visit is quick. But it's very crowded. Estimated waiting time was 2 hours. But fortunately, families with strollers get priority access without having to queue! Thank you for this.

Totally worth it. Was told that it wasn't worth it but turned out to be great. Spent an hour. Great views. Definitely a workout to move around and go up and down stairs.

It's a magnificent (if somewhat empty) space that transports us to another era. The church was being renovated, so there's nothing to see.

Jerónimos Monastery | UNESCO World Heritage site

Built over a century starting in 1501, the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon is a stunning example of Portuguese architecture. This UNESCO World Heritage site took a hundred years to complete. It represents the age of discovery, a time when most of the world was unknown. Funded by King Manuel I, it housed Hieronymite monks who prayed for sailors' safety on voyages. Decorated with maritime motifs, the monastery reflects Portugal's maritime history.

Plan Your Visit to Jerónimos Monastery

Things to know before booking your Jerónimos Monastery tickets

  • Tickets for peak season (October to March) can sell out well in advance – if this is when you are planning to visit, book at least two months ahead.
  • During peak season, lines at Jerónimos can stretch around the block, with wait times up to 2-3 hours. Book your tickets online to skip the lengthy queue for buying tickets and get there just before opening time to beat the crowds at the security check.
  • Entry to the Jeronimos Monastery is free for residents of Portugal on Sundays and public holidays, but we recommend visiting on Monday or Tuesday to avoid huge crowds.
  • For weekend visits, try to arrive right at opening time or after 2pm when the crowds thin out.
  • You can choose between: basic entry or combo deals that include other popular nearby attractions like Belém Tower, São Jorge Castle, and Pena Palace. If you are in Lisbon for the first time and planning to visit multiple sites, combo deals are a great way to maximize time and value.
  • Opting for a guided tour can significantly elevate your experience, they offer fast-track entry plus insights into the art, architecture, and stories behind the landmarks. But if you prefer to explore at your own pace, audio guides are a flexible alternative.
  • Are you looking for a more in-depth Belém experience? Book the Belém walking tour, covering the rich history of Jerónimos monastery, the area, and nearby landmarks.
  • Get more bang for your buck in Lisbon! The Lisbon Card includes free transport and entry to must-sees like Jeronimos Monastery, Belém Tower, and Quinta da Regaleira.
  • Access to the Church of Santa Maria de Belém is free and has a separate entrance on the right side of the complex. It's smart to visit the church first since crowds tend to grow thicker throughout the day. After visiting the church, you'll need to exit and join a different line for the monastery itself.
  • Parts of the monastery have cobblestone flooring, which can be tricky for wheelchairs.
  • The audio tour requires a relatively recent smartphone – Android 5.0+ or newer iOS devices (it won't work on Windows phones or older Apple devices).
  • When planning your visit to Jerónimos, you'll want to explore the surrounding Belém area, which is packed with fascinating attractions. Just be generous with your scheduling–between the potentially long queues and the monastery's captivating cloisters (where many visitors find themselves lingering longer than expected), it's best to keep your day's itinerary flexible.

What I loved most about this experience was the ease of presenting the e-ticket, and of course seeing the inside of the monastery, it is truly beautiful. The bad thing, the waiting time to enter, today I had a long line at 11 am and I was able to enter until 12:50 pm.
